I was somewhat surprised to see this guy leaning against a bicycle stand, propping up his laptop in the bright afternoon sunlight. What could he be doing here, on the east side of Broadway between 80th and 81st Street?

I suppose I could have asked him, but he looked pretty focused on what he was doing ... so I looked around for an explanation. Aha, yes, there it was, right behind me: one of the many Starbucks coffeeshops in the neighborhood. Starbucks has a publicly-accessible Wifi network, which most people use indoors (that's the whole point, obviously: you go inside, buy yourself a ridiculously expensive latte, and then sit there and sip it while you surf the Web). But this guy had figured out that he could access the signal from outside, and was probably too cheap to go indoors and pay for a cup of coffee.

I'm sad to report that his laptop was a Dell computer, rather than a classy Mac Powerbook that I would have preferred to see ...

This is part of an evolving photo-project, which will probably continue throughout the summer of 2008, and perhaps beyond: a random collection of "interesting" people in a broad stretch of the Upper West Side of Manhattan -- between 72nd Street and 104th Street, especially along Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue.

I don't like to intrude on people's privacy, so I normally use a telephoto lens in order to photograph them while they're still 50-100 feet away from me; but that means I have to continue focusing my attention on the people and activities half a block away, rather than on what's right in front of me.

I've also learned that, in many cases, the opportunities for an interesting picture are very fleeting -- literally a matter of a couple of seconds, before the person(s) in question move on, turn away, or stop doing whatever was interesting. So I've learned to keep the camera switched on (which contradicts my traditional urge to conserve battery power), and not worry so much about zooming in for a perfectly-framed picture ... after all, once the digital image is uploaded to my computer, it's pretty trivial to crop out the parts unrelated to the main subject.

For the most part, I've deliberately avoided photographing bums, drunks, drunks, and crazy people. There are a few of them around, and they would certainly create some dramatic pictures; but they generally don't want to be photographed, and I don't want to feel like I'm taking advantage of them. I'm still looking for opportunities to take some "sympathetic" pictures of such people, which might inspire others to reach out and help them. We'll see how it goes ...

The only other thing I've noticed, thus far, is that while there are lots of interesting people to photograph, there are far, far, *far* more people who are *not* so interesting. They're probably fine people, and they might even be more interesting than the ones I've photographed ... but there was just nothing memorable about them.

This is me - Self Portrait February 28, 2009

I've posted lots of silly pictures of myself here (photoshopped, montaged, over sharpened, etc.). I browsed trough all of them yesterday and realized that many of them have had (for me) a surprising amount of views here on Flickr. So I decided that I should take a straight, ordinary self portrait of myself and post here too -- so that my Flickr contacts could see that I sometimes look quite normal.

So I waited until the house was empty today and went to work. Before ending up with this one, I snapped a lot of photos. But the smile you see on my face here on the last photo of the series isn't fake: What you see is me laughing at myself when I realize what I ended up with in the lighting department.

In my bedroom there's a window on the roof as well as on the wall. So I thought I'd just sit down below the "skylight" window to get some "hair light" from it. I placed a black blanket on the bed I'm sitting on, so that I wouldn't become light blue in the face from light reflecting off my bed sheets.

But the downlight without any reflection from underneath created too many shadows in my face, so I brought in a gold reflector I bought on a whim once (and never used before today). The reflector gave me a nice tan, but it completely overshadowed the window light from the side. Now I had strange shadows from below.

So I brought in a flash to lighten the shadows. That did the job, but created a harsh shadow on the wall behind me. I happen to have another flash, so I set the second up with a cheap cardboard softbox I bought online. This lights the left side of my face.

The result was better, but there were still a shadow behind me from the first flash. I ended up with bouncing that off the wall on my right.

When I discovered I sat in the middle of all sorts of lighting gadgets, I just had to smile, and when I noticed I had folded my hands as if I was praying (I wasn't -- I'm hiding the remote shutter release), I realized how absurd this would look if my wife walked in on me. So the smile and the laugh is heartfelt.

But anyway: This is me a saturday in February 2009.

One of the rare non-Apple laptops seen in an otherwise cool park full of cool people

This woman was typing away on a laptop computer ... alas, it was not an Apple Powerbook. But maybe she doesn't know any better. Just think: if she had been typing on a Mac, her photo probably would have been published a thousand times by now!

Late in the afternoon on the last day in March 2009, I walked into Bryant Park, which is located behind the New York Public Library, between 41st and 42nd Street, facing Avenue of the Americas. There were several people reading and basking in the sun, a couple people typing on their laptop computers, and one chess game underway. I spent about half an hour wandering around to see what looked photo-worthy, and then wandered off to get some dinner...
