Do you have ethernet on the laptop? It looks like a phone port but is larger with 8 contacts on the bottom instead of 2. If so, get a router. Turn on the router between the modem and computer, a modem connected to the WAN port, a PC to a LAN port. Then take another Ethernet cable and connect the laptop to a port LAN seconds. If you want to go wireless laptop, then get a wireless router, then get a PC card or wireless adapter USB to the laptop if it has Wi-Fi now.

Is there a way to use the PS2 network adapter without connecting directly to the modem?

I ask because it seems the only so I can play online on my PS2 is to connect the cable modem main dircectly. Doing this disables my home using the Internet. Is there a way to connect from another computer or through a router of some kind?

Yes, provided they have a network hub or router that will release an additional Ethernet cable to connect to your PS2. I realized that my router have been reset when I tried to connect my PS2 for the first time.
